Following the idea of “hedonistic sustainability”, the Amager Bakke Resource Center (ARC) is a waste to energy plant turned Disneyland, Danish style. Designed by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, the concept to transform a utilitarian piece of infrastructure into something fun and playful for everybody was a big success for Copenhagen. Opened to the public in 2019, ARC is widely visible throughout the city. Topped with a year-round ski slope, the world’s highest climbing wall (85m) and a hiking trail, the project has become a magnet for tourists and Copenhageners alike and is a testament to the power of innovative architecture ,transforming utilitarian structures into community assets. Its impact extends beyond waste management, making it a symbol of Copenhagen's commitment to a more sustainable and vibrant urban future.
