Situated opposite of the existing golden glass tower of the Axel Springer headquarters, built 1966 in Berlin, the new Axel Springer Campus is the media-companies’ big step into a digitized future. The wall, once separating East and West Germany, diagonally crossed through the site. The Architects of OMA – Office for Metropolitan Architecture - developed their design-concept around the idea of two opposing forces - the large glass volume opens up to both, the exterior and interior. Two gigantic atriums meet inside and form a digital valley through a series of stepped down terraces, luring Berlin’s digital Bohemia inside - all spanned by the space-ship-enterprise like command bridge of the WELT, one of Germanys larges newspapers. The colour-palette of the interior follows the notion of this juxtaposition – white and black mark the break of East and West, the Digital and manual. The feeling inside is one of awe – its how Pinocchio would have felt inside the whales’ belly had a light-filled building swallowed him instead.
