Located in the cultural district of central Perth, Western Australia, the WA Museum Boola Bardip showcases the states natural and cultural collections, as well as providing spaces for events, gatherings, retail and dining. Designed by Office for Metrolpolitan Architecture/OMA in collaboration with HASSELL, the building winds itself around a central public open space, the “city room”, framing the juxtaposition of heritage-listed buildings with its own presence. Conceived as a framework to “share the diverse stories of Western Australia - a State characterised by its extraordinary people and places and home to the oldest continuous culture on earth…” (text by OMA), the building seems to emphasize the colonial history over an approach to an original indigenous culture.
